The AgroCares Global Soil
Database

To predict the soil status, the Lab-in-a-Box compares its results to our unique Global Soil
Database. It is developed and permanently updated by AgroCares’ research team in our own
Golden Standard Laboratory following a standardised procedure to ensure accurate results. We
aim to develop this database until it covers the entire world so every farmer has access to the

Frequently asked questions

Working with the Lab in a Box can be split into 4 simple steps:

  1. Collecting the sample (taking the sample on arable land 0-30 cm)
  2. Sample registration & preparation (drying, grinding, splitting, milling)
  3. Sample analysis – sample analysis is done with two spectrometers Xray and MidInfrared. The received spectral information is converted via prediction models that are based on the AgroCares Database into useful soil data.
  4. Receiving the Report – after analysis the reports can be downloaded from the Portal within a few minutes

The whole procedure of preparation and analysis until finished report takes approximately 2 hours, depending on the drying time of the sample. No use of chemicals is required for the analysis with the Lab-in-a-Box.

To enable the operation of an AgroCares Lab-in-a-Box in a new country, it is important to establish a local calibration database. To calibrate a country or area of interest a specified set of samples has to be collected at location pre-defined by AgroCares R&D, which are then to be analysed at the Golden Standard Laboratory in the Netherlands before this information is being integrated into the global soil database and predictions models are created. Depending on the size of the country and area this can take several month until the database is finalized.

Under certain circumstances it is possible to use the Lab-in-a-Box for calibration while it is partially operational in an uncalibrated area.

The analysis of samples with the Lab-in-Box is to be paid through the purchase of an annual license. There are different packages of annual licenses available depending on the amount of samples to be analysed.

In addition to the annual license, the following costs occur when purchasing a Lab-in-a-Box: Hardware, annual support fee, training & installation (on-off) and customization of the report (one-off).

How many soil samples can be analysed with the Lab-in-Box per day?

The Lab-in-a-Box can perform the analyse of 60-80 samples per day within the standard setup of the equipment. The sample throughput per day can be increased with a more extended equipment setup to increase milling and drying capacity.

AgroCares uses the personal data we receive from our customers for the following purposes:

  • Provide the most affective and fast support in case any issues or questions occur.
  • Ensure that the content in Portal and Application is shown in the most efficient and practical manner.
  • Provide location based services to our customers.
  • For AgroCares research purposes with the aim to enhance the quality of the database and improve the overall accuracy
  • For AgroCares to carry out contractual obligations based on the agreements with our customers and partners.

The number of operators required for the Lab-in-a-Box depends on the amount of samples to be analysed in a day. For the most efficient setup we suggest 2 operators. One handling soil preparation and one being in charge of soil analysis.

The Liab operators do not have to be trained Lab personal. However, it is an advantage if the operators understand basic English and have knowledge to work with computers. AgroCares staff will provide an extensive 4-5 days training during the installation.

The warranty of the analytical and processing equipment will be of maximum 1 year and bounded and limited to the terms and conditions set by the original manufacturer of the equipment. Damage due to malpractice, misuse of the equipment and or natural disasters will not be covered by the warranty.
